Using Sea Salt to fight Acne, my 6 month update.

In July I wrote about how I had started using Sea Salt to fight my daily acne problem, and I just wanted to do an update and share this information with anyone who didn't read it back then.

I've had moderate acne since I was about 10-11 (I'm now almost 21). I've used Pro Active and a lot of drugstore products but nothing reduced my acne more than 20% if I was lucky. In June I read about using sea salt on your skin to fight acne. I didn't really think it would work but since I already had loads of it at home I thought why not try it.

Within a week I could already see that I wasn't getting as many breakouts a day as I usually did. Old breakouts were healing more quickly and my foundation looked better because I was exfoliating my skin every day.

After about 6 weeks 95% of my acne was gone. I wasn't getting more than 1-2 pimples a week and they were usually half gone before I noticed them. After two months I generally only broke out the week before or of my period.

My skin still isn't perfect but it hasn't been this nice since before puberty. I'm not ashamed to go around my house at night after I've washed my makeup off and have my family see my skin. I still wear foundation every day but I don't have to wear as much of it. I get a pimple every once in a while (mostly just when I forget to use the salt) but they don't get as big as they use to and they heal more quickly.

How I use it:

Its so simple, at night in the shower after I've used my regular face wash to remove my make up I put 1/2 a teaspoon of salt in my wet palms. I then gently scrub my face for 10-15 seconds and wash it off. Sometimes I'll do this in the morning too. I'm actually saving money because I don't use face wash in the morning anymore like I use to.

If my skin is acting up I'll put the salt on and leave it for 5 minutes. You can mix it with honey or your face wash and use it as a mask if you want a more intense treatment.

Also I've gotten one of those small travel size spray bottles from Target and mixed a tablespoon of salt with water and I'll spray that on my face at night every so often. This is good if you have body acne and can't reach some areas like your back or shoulders. Sometimes I'll add 1/2 a cup of salt to my bath just because I breakout on my legs.

Generally its better to use Sea Salt rather then refined salt because it has more 'nutrients,' for lack of a better word, but refined salt will work in a pinch. Try it out, its cheap and doesn't take much effort. I hope it works for any of you who have the same problem I did.

First of all, thanks for this post - I am willing to try anything to rid me of the acne that came out of nowhere two years ago and turned my much-envied gorgeous skin into a disaster. Secondly - I have a demanding job, a demanding three-year-old princess and am kinda alone the last year so I have ZERO time. But your blog - I will make the time. Love the nail blog which is how I found you in the fists place and this one as well. Great writing, to the point, without the little girly giggles seen on most other blogs. Great job! All the best from your new fan. Funtasy!

nice tips. Never thought that salt can also be a treatment for acne. I'm open to new treatments especially those proven treatments like this but I'm using an acne product, I'm still satisfied with the results. I'll just recommend this to my friend. She's having a lot of breakouts.
Thanks again.

Sorry , I'm portuguese and I just understand some basic english. Do you wear like regular salt ? Not refined , that one a little "bigger". And do you just put it on your hands and rub it ?

Thanks ! :D

Miana you can use whatever you have. I put the salt in my hands and gently scrub my face.

Thanks for sharing about the sea salt.

I've had acne since my teens {I'll be 41 next week -- I still occasional breakouts}. I've been using a shea butter black soap over 6-months now. I got my bar from Duane Reade {forgot the name of the brand} for $4. My skin is nice and clear. It's the clearest it's ever been.

Oh the great properties of sea salt. It's famous in the tattoo and piercing realm, I used it on a fresh piercing and it totally helped with reducing swelling and preventing infections. The anti-bacterial properties of sea salt are quite great.

Sea salt definitely worked for me. I started to break out more than usual a couple of weeks ago. All over my face! I was so embarrassed to go out during the day, because it was so noticeable. Some of my family members even noticed my horrible breakout which made me feel even worse. Anyway, I mixed around a tablespoon of sea salt with about 1/4 cup of water. I heated it up for 10-15 seconds, this helps the sea salt dissolve much quicker. Then, i applied it directly on my face with a cotton swab. I would leave it on my face over night. I did this for a week and my fave almost, if not completely, cleared up. Today my sister even commented on how nice my face looked. I definitely recommend anyone with acne to try this. It is definitely worth it. Not only will your acne diminish, your face will look much cleaner and healthier. I wish i would have tried this sooner! One more thing, when the sea salt dries on your face, it will feel stiff and it will be a little painful if you lie on your face. Nothing to worry about, however.
